(EstateNewsWire.com, November 11, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia -- Plants in various gardens could not survive the summer months if owners did not provide them a literal lifeline through hoses and automatic irrigation heads bringing them water to their roots and leaves.
However, when water is placed for esthetic purposes, the gardener is the one who truly benefits.
The sight, the sound, and the feel calms and cools us, at least psychologically, as it soothes our souls.
Adding water to the landscaping look can be complicated, involving digging a pond and filling the hole with proper grounding and fish or aquatic plants. However, it does not have to be a an arduous task to install a proper fountain
Fountains do require a little maintenance, but it is not nearly as heavy a task as a fully flush water garden.
Once a week, natural evaporation results from water circulation and some water must be replenished. Leaves and debris should be removed around once a week during the dry season; more frequently during the fall.
Nearly any sized space can be fitted with a proper fountain given the proper design and preparation.
Michael McClain, landscaping designer with Turfmaster, designed fountains from materials that were left over from previous projects. One such modification is with a bowling ball, wherein Michael drilled one of the finger holes completely through, placing a column for a lighting fixture.
"The column was already drilled for electric wire, so we just ran a water line up through it into the ball," McClain said. "The sound of water is calming," McClain said. "And the whole purpose of gardening is to get peace in your life."
The show also had examples of other great fountain-modified concepts, such as tall glass jars cascading of the sides of rocks, allowing water to bubble out of the holes.
Customers of Memphis Water Works in Cooper-Young have their own stone drilled to create effect.
"Most of our customers buy a single boulder and set it on a small pool hidden by the crushed limestone that fills it," said Frank Roberts Jr. of Memphis Water Works. "We usually create a sitting area or a walkway where you can't see where the pavement stops and the pool starts."
Another great addition to watery gardens is daffodils. While the flowers will not show up until next spring, it does not mean you should avoid buying them now. In fact, fall is the perfect time to purchase and plant them.
