The group is dedicated to mentoring, training and educating these youth by providing transitional living in a home centered on offering essential tools that would otherwise be unattainable to these kids.
The problem is that the only affordable housing is a major fixer upper which the Ann Arbor handyman can help with. Keith Paul, owner of HandyPro handyman Service (http://www.handypro.com) will be providing materials and qualified volunteers to help renovate a home in Southfield, recently purchased by Mission 1:17. When the remodeling is complete the home will be a beacon of hope, learning and development to young adults transitioning out of the foster care system.
The Ann Arbor Handyman is proud to make a difference in his community by helping young people between the age of 16 21 that have remained in the foster care system hoping to be adopted. In many cases they have been moved from home to home without ever having a sense of belonging. The shocking statistics are what inspired the Ann Arbor Handyman to get involved:
Only 58% will graduate high school by age 19
Fewer than 3% will earn a college degree by age 25
25% will be incarcerated within 2 years of leaving system
71% of young women who have aged out are pregnant by age 21
Things are not so bleak for those who have the help of a mentor and family. Studies show that children aging out of foster care through a faith-centered transitional housing program fare much better.
85% are NEVER incarcerated
80% say in school
