(EstateNewsWire.com, October 20, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- An Indiana pastor says God has answered his congregation’s call to upgrade the church.
Pastor Gilbert Thornton said the number of parishioners at God’s Way Family Worship Center was declining because the church lacked indoor plumbing and toilets. There are two outhouses behind the church, but they are uncomfortable to use during winter or inclement weather.
When he asked his community for help, donations poured in.
“I thank God for it. I really do,” Thornton told The Associated Press. He said his church’s two new indoor restrooms could be ready for use by Thanksgiving.
“We had two Sunday school rooms, and we’re putting the bathroom in one of them,” the pastor said.
The biggest challenges the church faced were setting up lines for water and sewer service, and paying for equipment and labor.
“I know it is from God, every bit of it,” Thornton said. “Man can’t get past the obstacles we faced.”
He said his church raised $2,050 for the water hookup and $890 for the sewer line.
“I haven’t had to come up with a penny,” said Thornton. “We got the water meter and line in, and now the guys are working inside the building.”
Tim Spicer is one of the volunteers. He is installing toilets, sinks and flooring at no charge, working on his days off.
Thornton offers his thanks to everyone, including to his Lord.
“People said I needed to have a fundraiser, and I said, ‘No, He is the fundraiser,” the pastor said, and he pointed to the sky.
