(EstateNewsWire.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Topsfield, Massachusetts - Within only a few short days of opening, the 194th annual Topsfield Fair made history. Weighing in at a hefty 2,009 pounds, a new record for the largest pumpkin and fruit in the world was set. The winner of the grandeus $15,500 prize for this huge pumpkin went to Ron Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island.
In 1984, the “All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off” began at the Topsfield World Fair. During the first year, the first place winner’s pumpkin weighed in at a measly 433 pounds, which was then awarded a cool $100. Now, close to 30 years later, the contest has become an event recognized worldwide.
Minimum weight for pumpkins entered into the fair must be no less than 300 pounds to even qualify for the grand prize. Most pumpkins entered into the fair weigh hundreds more than the minimum. The top 25 entries in 2008 top the scales of more than half a ton.
The newly set record holder’s pumpkin overshadowed the previous year’s pumpkin’s weight, which came in at 1,668.5 pounds and smashed the previous world record. That previous world record was set at 1,843.5 pounds. Wallace took home $5,500 for grand prize at the fair, and $10,000 for setting the new record.
The huge pumpkins are brought in on construction looking equipment, not typical fair vehicles. They come in wheeled in on forklifts, lifted into the air, and then plunged down onto an oversized scale to determine their final weight.
