There are numerous celebrities living in Santa Barbara – Queen of daytime TV Oprah Winfrey owns a home in the ritzy Montecito neighbourhood, which occupies the eastern portion of the coastal plain and counts Jeff Bridges and Bo Derek amongst her neighbours.
Viva Las Vegas
If neon is what you crave, head on down to Sin City for a weekend of gambling and high octane entertainment.
With 300 days of sunshine a year, Las Vegas also offers amenities matching those of Los Angeles and New York, for a fraction of the population.
The city is a thriving metropolis in a serene desert setting, and underneath the flashy resorts, is a city like many others, with good schools and universities, churches, libraries and fine restaurants.
Less than 20 miles away is Red Rock Canyon, set in 197,000 acres within the Mojave Desert, which is perfect for hiking and biking.
More than 50,000 new residents make Las Vegas home yearly and the cityÂ’s population stands to exceed two million by 2010. According to the U.S. Census, every hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, another two acres of Las Vegas land are developed for commercial or residential use.
The most exclusive properties are to be found on the famous Strip, in the heart of the action. You don’t get much more glitzy than the £145 million Trump International Hotel and Tower, which is clad in 24 carat gold glass, and is one of the city’s highest buildings.
And on to Arizona
The incredible thing about living in USAÂ’s west is that it offers such a range of settings that you may feel you have entered a whole new country.
Across the Nevada border lies a totally different world to Las Vegas. Arizona offers stunning vistas across the Grand Canyon and the desert and the magical mountain peaks – known as ‘sky islands.’
An hour and a half from the capital, Phoenix, lies vibrant Prescott, packed with art galleries, antique shops, restaurants and the famous Whiskey Row, named for the saloons that once lined the street.
5,000 feet up, Prescott offers four distinct yet mild seasons; perfect weather to enjoy the nearby lakes and national forests.
